Sometimes you will get mail returned after you have updated the mailed-to address with a new one. Simply marking the existing address as a bad address does not work under these circumstances. The solution is to match each piece of mail to a specific address. If a piece of mail is returned, we should look up the address it was mailed to and update the account provided it still has the same address.
We have created code to track each piece of mail using a special code. This code and the address the letter was mailed to will be stored. The “code” can be printed on each letter as a barcode or scan line. If mail is returned, we can use the barcode or scan line to identify the mail, look up the address and mark only that address as bad.
